Federal Agencies
In the event of a foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak, multiple government agencies will be involved to ensure a swift, coordinated response.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is the agency that leads in an FMD response. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will be involved in investigating the outbreak and coordinating the response if the outbreak is suspected to be intentional. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide systems to support on-the-ground response operations.
